Results of First Offering of the Resilency Seminar at Youngstown State University:
Initial resutls of this seminar for students is positive. The mean grade of the resiliency group (3.36) is statistically significantly higher than the control group (2.38). This is equivalent to one grade level. These results, however, must be taken with caution since we did not have random assignment, and there could be alternative explanations as to why the Resiliency Group performed better in than the Control Group.
I did run ANCOVA to see if the GROUP variable made a difference once adjusted for GPA. The results held, and GROUP was significant at the p=.05 level. Therefore, the resiliency intervention looks promising in this preliminary test, and should be evaluated using a more controlled design. Even if there is something special about the 11 students in the Resiliency program, (e.g., perhaps it is most likely to work for them), the intervention did work for them. This study merits further testing (because if it doesn't work when it's most likely to work, then it probably won't work in a more varied sample).
